Test AI Max before Google upgrades your ads for you
Google will replace Dynamic Search Ads in September.
A lot of small businesses set up Google Search ads once, then leave them alone until the results get weird.
Google says Dynamic Search Ads will start upgrading to AI Max in September, so this is a good week to test the new setup on your terms instead of waiting for the forced switch.
What AI Max is
AI Max is Google's newer Search campaign setup for advertisers who want Google to do more of the matching and page selection work. It can expand query matching, customize ad text, and send people to a more relevant page on your site.
If you still use Dynamic Search Ads, this is the replacement path. Google says eligible campaigns with Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets, or campaign-level broad match will start moving to AI Max automatically in September.
What changes for a small business
This is most useful for businesses that already run Search ads but do not have time to babysit every keyword, headline, and landing page. Think home services, local healthcare, legal, real estate, B2B services, and other teams that rely on lead forms or phone calls.
But AI Max is only as good as the pages and conversion tracking behind it. If your site still sends people to weak pages, outdated promos, or generic service pages, giving Google more freedom can make the mess bigger.
Why it matters for a small business
The deadline is the real story here. Google is telling advertisers to switch early, and it now has a built-in experiment flow so you can test AI Max inside an existing Search campaign instead of rebuilding everything from scratch.
That makes this a low-friction marketing cleanup job, not a full AI project. One controlled test now is a lot safer than discovering in September that Google expanded your traffic into pages or queries you never meant to pay for.
What to do this week
- Find any Search campaign still using Dynamic Search Ads or other older Google automation settings.
- Pick one campaign that already gets steady traffic and run an AI Max test there first.
- Add URL exclusions for pages you do not want paid traffic landing on, like careers, account pages, old promos, or thin pages.
- Check your lead form, phone call, or booked appointment tracking before you compare results.
- Review the search terms and landing pages after the test before rolling AI Max out wider.
