OpenAI and Microsoft rewrite their core partnership

OpenAI and Microsoft said Monday they amended their partnership, keeping Azure as OpenAI's primary cloud while unwinding several of the exclusivity terms that defined the relationship.

The new deal gives OpenAI more room to sell and run its products across other cloud providers, while Microsoft keeps first launch rights on Azure, a non-exclusive license to OpenAI IP through 2032, and its position as a major shareholder.

What changed

Both companies published matching summaries on April 27. The key line is that Microsoft remains OpenAI's primary cloud partner, and OpenAI products will still ship first on Azure unless Microsoft cannot and chooses not to support the needed capabilities.

At the same time, OpenAI can now serve all of its products across any cloud provider. That is a real shift from the tighter structure that helped define the early Microsoft OpenAI era.

What the new terms do

Microsoft's license to OpenAI IP for models and products now runs through 2032 on a non-exclusive basis. Microsoft also said it will no longer pay a revenue share to OpenAI.

OpenAI will keep paying Microsoft a revenue share through 2030 at the same percentage as before, but now with a total cap. Microsoft also stays directly exposed to OpenAI's growth through its equity stake.

Why it matters now

This gives OpenAI more distribution and infrastructure freedom without breaking the relationship that helped fund and scale it. Azure stays in the front seat, but OpenAI now has a clearer path to put products in more places.

For customers, the practical question is where future OpenAI workloads show up. For Microsoft, the win is that it still keeps first access on Azure, long-dated IP rights, and shareholder upside even as the old exclusivity softens.

What to watch next

Watch for new OpenAI product availability outside Azure, any follow-on infrastructure deals, and whether this change starts to show up in enterprise buying language, API hosting options, or custom model deployments.
