Google introduces Googlebook as Anthropic takes Claude Code to the web
Google unveils an AI laptop; Claude Code goes web-first.
Google used Wednesday to formally introduce Googlebook, a new laptop category built around Gemini Intelligence and deeper Android integration, with devices due this fall. Anthropic also opened a new front by putting Claude Code on the web in research preview, so coding sessions can run on Anthropic-managed cloud machines instead of only in a local terminal.
The smaller but still notable supporting move came from Google again: Personal Intelligence is now rolling out in the Gemini app in Australia, with opt-in connections to Gmail, Photos, YouTube, and Search. The common thread is simple: AI is moving into the surfaces where people actually work, browse, and keep context.
Today’s lineup
- Google unveils Googlebook, a new Gemini-first laptop category shipping this fall.
- Anthropic launches Claude Code on the web, with persistent cloud sessions and GitHub-connected coding tasks.
- Gemini's Personal Intelligence expands to Australia with opt-in access to Gmail, Photos, YouTube, and Search.
Google | Googlebook becomes an official product category
Google's Taiwan blog and the new googlebook.google teaser site describe Googlebook as a new laptop line designed for Gemini Intelligence. Google says it combines Android's app ecosystem and cross-device features with ChromeOS-style web strengths, then layers Gemini-driven features directly into the device experience.
The product site highlights Magic Pointer for asking Gemini about what is on screen, Create My Widget for generating custom widgets by prompt, and Android-linked features such as Cast My Apps and Quick Access. Google also says launch hardware is coming from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, with more details promised before fall availability.
Anthropic | Claude Code moves onto Anthropic-managed cloud machines
Anthropic's new Claude Code on the web page says the product is now in research preview for Pro, Max, and Team users, plus Enterprise users with premium seats or Chat + Claude Code seats. It runs at claude.ai/code on Anthropic-managed infrastructure, keeps sessions alive after you close the browser, and lets users monitor those sessions from the Claude mobile app.
The same docs package also shows Anthropic filling in the admin layer around that move. A new server-managed settings page says Teams and Enterprise admins can push Claude Code settings centrally from Claude.ai, including permission rules, hooks, and environment settings, without requiring full device management infrastructure.
Google | Personal Intelligence rolls out in Australia
Google's Australia blog says Personal Intelligence is now rolling out in the Gemini app there after first launching in the U.S. The feature lets users opt in to connect apps including Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube, and Search so Gemini can reason across them and pull specific details into answers.
Google says the connections are off by default, users choose which apps to link, and Gemini should reference or explain the information it used. That makes this a regional rollout story, but it also shows Google continuing to push Gemini toward a more context-rich personal assistant model.
Why it matters now
Wednesday's strongest signal was not a new benchmark or model name. It was AI getting packaged into more native runtime surfaces: a hosted coding environment, a laptop category, and an assistant that can work across personal data with explicit user consent.
That matters because distribution and control are starting to look as important as raw model quality. The companies that make AI feel built into the workflow, while still giving users and admins enough control, will have an advantage from here.
What to watch next
Watch for Googlebook pricing, hardware specs, and regional availability; for Anthropic to move Claude Code on the web beyond research preview; and for Google to keep widening Personal Intelligence beyond the current regional rollout.
