Gemini turns prompts into files as Anthropic and Manus shift
Anthropic funding chatter, Manus unwind.
Google now lets Gemini generate downloadable Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs, Word files, and Excel files directly in chat.
It was a lighter day for major model launches, so the other standout stories were business moves: TechCrunch reported Anthropic is fielding preemptive offers for a possible new $50 billion round, and fresh reporting kept the Manus-Meta unwind in focus.
Today’s lineup
- Google rolls out direct file generation in Gemini for Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs, Word, Excel, and more.
- TechCrunch reports Anthropic has received preemptive funding offers for a possible roughly $50 billion raise at up to a $900 billion valuation.
- Fresh reporting keeps the Meta-Manus unwind in focus after China moved to block the $2 billion deal.
Google | Gemini can now generate full files in chat
Google said Gemini can now create downloadable files directly from a prompt, including Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs, Microsoft Word files, Excel files, CSVs, Markdown, and plain text. The feature is available globally to Gemini app users.
That means a chat can now end with a real deliverable instead of pasted text. Google’s examples include exporting a budget proposal to Excel, turning loose ideas into a formatted draft, or bundling a long collaboration into a one-page PDF.
This is a small product update, but it closes a real gap. The less copying and reformatting people have to do after the model answers, the more useful the app becomes in day-to-day work.
Anthropic | Report says investors are circling another giant round
TechCrunch reported April 29 that Anthropic has received multiple preemptive offers for a new funding round of around $50 billion, at valuations in the $850 billion to $900 billion range. Anthropic has not confirmed a deal.
If the report holds, it would show that investor demand for top model labs is still climbing even after the last wave of mega-rounds. It would also keep Anthropic close to the same valuation territory now surrounding OpenAI.
This is still a reported financing process, not a finished transaction. But it is one of the clearest late-April signs that capital still wants into the frontier-model market at enormous scale.
Manus | The unwind fallout is still spreading
Fresh April 30 reporting from The Business Times kept attention on China’s order to unwind Meta’s $2 billion Manus acquisition, after TechCrunch first reported the NDRC’s intervention earlier this week. Manus is one of the most closely watched agent startups in this cycle.
The move matters beyond this one deal. Manus had already shifted to Singapore, but Beijing still stepped in, which suggests Chinese AI origin and control can outweigh later corporate structure when a company becomes strategically important.
For Meta, it is a direct hit to a fast route into the agent market. For everyone else watching cross-border AI deals, it is a reminder that geopolitics can still override the cleanest acquisition math.

Why it matters now
Today’s package was less about a new flagship model and more about where AI is tightening up around real work, real money, and real state control.
Google is pushing Gemini closer to finished output, Anthropic is still drawing giant capital interest, and the Manus reversal shows the agent market can change fast when politics gets involved.
What to watch next
Watch whether Google extends Gemini’s file generation into broader workflow automation, whether Anthropic confirms a new round or lets the chatter cool off, and whether Manus stays independent or looks for a different path after the Meta unwind.
